THEORY & HAZARD PERCEPTION

ABOUT THE PART 1 TEST

The Part 1 Test for becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is scheduled to last 1 hour and 30 minutes. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions covering a range of driving and instructional topics. These questions are divided into four sections, each containing four answer options, with one correct answer per question. To successfully pass this portion of the test, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 20 in each section. The overall passing score for the theory component is 85 or above.

In addition, candidates will be presented with 14 video clips depicting hazards developing on the road. During this hazard perception section, candidates are required to click as soon as they identify a hazard. A minimum score of 57 out of 100 is necessary to pass this part of the test.

What is the ADI Theory Test Like?

The ADI theory test consists of two parts: the Multiple Choice section and the Hazard Perception section.

Multiple Choice Section

  • Delivered on a touchscreen computer using a mouse.
  • You will answer 100 questions across four different categories:
    • Road procedures
    • Traffic signs and signals
    • Car control
    • Law and safety
  • Before the test, you can take a practice session to get familiar with the layout.
  • You have 90 minutes to complete this part.
  • To pass, you need at least 85% correct answers overall, and a minimum of 80% (20 out of 25) in each of the four categories.
  • You can flag questions to review later and navigate between questions.

Hazard Perception Section

  • After a short break, you’ll watch 14 video clips of real road scenes.
  • Each clip contains at least one developing hazard, with one clip featuring two hazards.
  • You respond by clicking a mouse button when you see a hazard developing.
  • Responding early scores higher points, with a maximum of 5 points per hazard.
  • The total passing score for this section is 57 out of 75.
  • You only get one chance to respond to each hazard, so quick reactions are important.

At the End of the Test

  • You will be asked some optional survey questions; these are anonymous and do not affect your results.
  • Once finished, you can leave the room, and the staff will inform you of your result.

DRIVING ABILITY

ABOUT THE PART 2 TEST

Driving Ability Test Overview

We’re here to guide you through the Part 2 driving instruction exam, which lasts approximately one hour. To successfully pass, candidates must limit minor faults to six or fewer. The test is divided into three essential parts: eyesight, safety questions, and driving technique—all of which must be completed successfully in one session.

1. Eyesight Test
Candidates should be able to read a vehicle registration mark in good daylight, with or without glasses or contact lenses. The required size is 79mm in height and either 50mm or 57mm wide, depending on the distance. Failing this test prevents progression to the driving assessment.

2. Safety Questions
Examiners will ask you to describe how to check three vehicle components for safety and demonstrate checks on two additional parts. These include items like tyres, steering, brakes, lights, reflectors, indicators, warning devices, and vehicle liquids such as brake fluid or engine coolant.

3. Driving Ability Test
This is an advanced driving assessment requiring a high standard of skill. You’ll need to demonstrate:

  • Precise control of the vehicle
  • Proper road procedures
  • Anticipation of other road users’ actions
  • Sound judgment of distance, speed, and timing
  • Consideration for safety and convenience

The route may include busy urban streets and rural roads, often with heavy or fast-moving traffic.

Skills & Maneuvers
Candidates should be comfortable performing various maneuvers, including:

  • Moving away straight ahead or at an angle
  • Overtaking safely and crossing paths
  • Turning left and right at corners
  • Emergency stops
  • Reversing into parking spaces or bays
  • Turning the vehicle around using forward and reverse gears
  • Reversing into parking spaces with good observation
